Rust College Baseball Set to Open 2025 Season with High Expectations
Coach Bates, who took over the program in August 2021, has compiled a 58-73-1 record during his tenure. Under his leadership, Rust College Baseball has achieved several milestones, including seven All-Black College selections, four All-Conference selections, seven All-Tournament selections, one Conference MVP, and three HBCU All-Star Game selections. The Bearcats have also had three players sign professional contracts and have been ranked in the top five nationally in stolen bases twice. Additionally, the program boasts three appearances in the Tyson Foods Black College World Series and won the inaugural Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Regular Season Championship.
With the transition into the HBCU Athletic Conference (HBCUAC), the Bearcats are prepared to make their mark. The arrival of new pitching coach Eric Tolar from Southern Arkansas University has already made a positive impact, adding depth and development to the pitching staff.
Despite losing some key contributors from last season, Rust College returns several experienced players, including senior third baseman Jalik Demar, a First-Team All-Conference selection, along with veteran outfielders JaShaun Franks and Shemaar Stapleton. D.K. Warren and Kyrent Cole are expected to provide leadership in the middle infield, with Cole coming off an impressive 2024 GCAC tournament performance where he led the team in RBIs.
On the mound, Rust College will rely on returning arms Mykelti Jordan, Kyron Baker, and Arvis Latting to anchor the pitching staff. With significant growth shown during the fall season, the young staff looks ready to contribute at a high level.
