Rust College Women's Basketball Season Concludes with a Hard-Fought Tournament Run

The season marked an important milestone for the program, as the Bearcats advanced by winning their first-round matchup against SUNO (Southern University of New Orleans) with a 64-61 victory. Finishing the season with an overall record of 12-16 and a conference record of 9-9, the Bearcats exceeded preseason expectations by finishing 7th in the conference – one spot higher than the predicted 8th.

 

This season was particularly significant as it marked the first year under Head Coach Jalessa Sams, who made her debut at Rust College as a head coach. Coach Sams led the team with determination and a fresh vision for the program, laying the foundation for future success.

 

Standout performances came from key players who helped define the season. Guard Patsy Johnson averaged 15.3 points per game, shooting 33% from three-point range, earning her recognition as one of the top three scorers in the conference and among the top eight in three-point percentage. Forward Michaela Payton contributed an impressive 11.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, shooting 50% from the field – ranking her among the top two rebounders and in the top six for field goal percentage.

 

"Although we fell just short in the tournament, I couldn't be prouder of our team's effort and the progress we've made this season," said Head Coach Jalessa Sams. "Our achievements, from the historic win over SUNO to exceeding preseason expectations, are the first building blocks for a program we're committed to developing. I believe the experiences of this season will only make us stronger in the years to come."
