Eutectics Drop Final Game of Series in Mississippi

HOLLY SPRINGS, MISS. - After two straight victories over the Rust College Bearcats in two days, the Eutectic baseball team dropped the final game of the series, 7-1, on Sunday in Holly Springs, Miss.

After a quiet couple of innings from both dugouts, the Bearcat bats began to heat up in the bottom of the third. After two doubles and a single from the home team, a fly-out to shortstop Jovonnie Bautista ended the inning with the Bearcats up 2-0.

Another quiet inning followed, but in the top of the fifth, Barrett Bressette reached base on an error. Two outs later, Logan Stribling ripped an RBI double to score Bressette and mark the board for the Eutectics.

Up 2-1 in the bottom of the inning, the Bearcats scored three more runs off two walks and three singles to increase their lead to 5-1. After holding UHSP in the top of the sixth, Rust loaded the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Bearcat baserunners Jalik Demar and Kyrent Cole both stole home before UHSP third-baseman Nolan Harding and catcher Bressette chased down a final attempt to steal home by a Rust player to finish the inning.

After three UHSP outs in the top of the seventh, the 7-1 victory went to Rust.

Rust's Arvis Latting earned the win on the mound, giving up one hit, on run, two walks, and striking out one. Jordan Gonzalez was charged with the loss for UHSP, giving up three hits, two earned runs, one walk, and striking out two in 5.1 innings.

After the three-game series in Mississippi, the Eutectics return to St. Louis with a 2-1 start to the program's first countable season. UHSP will host Calumet College of St. Joseph for a home opener double header on Friday, Feb. 23, at Harris-Stowe State University's Stars Park. First pitch is at 12 p.m.
