Women's Basketball falls to GCAC leader Rust

The Wiley University women's basketball team fell behind early and was unable to recover in a 79-47 loss against the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference leader Rust College Thursday at Alumni Gymnasium.

It is the first home loss for the Lady Wildcats this season. They were outshot 48.3 to 24.2 percent. Wiley didn't get their first points until 4:20 left in the first quarter. It didn't make its first field goal until 1:30 left in the first. The Lady Bearcats lead 20-4 after the opening period. They increased their lead to 22 in the second quarter.

With five minutes remaining, the Lady Wildcats got in a rhythm offensively. A layup by Ashunti Cooper sparked a 14-point run. Three-pointers by Jay'lann Myles and Cooper cut the margin to eight with 1:11 left in the first half. Wiley trailed 35-24 at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Wildcats pulled within eight on a 3-pointer by Kewaysha Alsup. Rust hit 3-pointers on their next two possessions to push the margin to 14 points. Wiley was unable to respond.

Myles led Wiley with 12 points off the bench. She contributed four steals, three rebounds and an assist. Cooper followed with 11 points – adding two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Kiersten Harris led the team with seven rebounds and three assists. Minnie Miller blocked two shots.

The Lady Wildcats will continue their homestand on Saturday against Tougaloo College. The Lady Bulldogs fell 87-64 at Philander Smith University on Thursday. Tipoff is at 5 p.m.
