Volleyball Goes 2-2 at Freed-Hardeman Labor Day Tournament

            Henderson, Tenn. – Central Baptist College volleyball recently went 2-2 over the weekend at the Freed-Hardeman Labor Day Tournament. CBC (3-6) won the bookend matches 3-1 over Rust on Friday and 3-0 over Tougaloo on Saturday and lost the two matches in between, falling 3-1 to Johnson on Friday and 3-0 to Fisk on Saturday.

            Madeline Freeman and Faith Stone earned all-tournament team honors for their performances. Freeman played in all 14 sets and had 34 kills, a .231 hitting percentage, 47 assists, nine aces and 33 digs. Stone also played in all 14 sets and finished with 28 kills, a .281 hitting percentage, six assists, nine aces, six digs and five blocks.

MATCH ONE – CBC 3, RUST 1

            The Mustangs defeated Rust in the first match on Friday, winning sets one, two and four while hitting .153 with 46 kills and 13 service aces against only five service errors. Katey Pate topped the Mustangs with 11 kills while Freeman had a team-high 18 assists, with Brooke Schmitz adding 12, and Mikayla Lawrence, who earned AMC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, led the way with 13 digs.

MATCH TWO – JOHNSON 3, CBC 1

            CBC captured the first set against Johnson before dropping the final three. Freeman posted a double-double with a team-high 12 kills and 10 digs while Schmitz led the way in assists with 14 and aces with six and Lawrence had 24 digs in the defeat.

MATCH THREE – FISK 3, CBC 0

            CBC faced Fisk in the opening match on Saturday and was swept in straight sets. Pate once again led the way in kills with six while Freeman paced in assists with 11 and Lawrence posted 14 digs.

MATCH FOUR – CBC 3, TOUGALOO 0

            The Mustangs dominated the Bulldogs in the final set, winning 25-17, 25-12 and 25-14. CBC hit .234 in the match and had 39 kills, led by 11 from Ahna Merrell. Schmitz again led the way in assists with 15 and Lawrence had another 20-plus dig match, finishing with 25.

            CBC returns to the court tonight in Springfield, Mo., as they face the Patriots of Baptist Bible College. First serve from W.E. Dowell Fieldhouse is scheduled for 6 p.m.
