Staying Alive: Bonner Sends Bearcats Past Talladega With Walk-off Win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Rust College baseball program saw the same guy capture the win on the mound and drive home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth as D'Anfrenee Bonner set off a raucous celebration with his bases loaded single to keep the Bearcats alive in the Black College World Series, beating Talladega 5-4.

Bonner accomplished something that not many baseball players can claim, picking up the pitching victory, recording the final two outs in the top half, then turning around and lacing a walk-off single back up the box to send his team to the next round of a World Series.

Both ends of the batting order shone bright for the Bearcats as leadoff hitter Tremaine Callaway went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, stolen base, run scored and a pair of walks while nine-hole batter Victor Clay had a near spitting image stat line of 2-for-4 with a two-bagger, steal, and a ribbie but the only difference was he crosse the dish twice.

Khalil Robinson reached base safely twice on the evening, knocking a seeing-eye single and drawing an RBI walk.

Brytan Sampson got the start and showed off his electric stuff, sitting down eight Tornadoes over six-and-a-third frames with just two earned runs allowed (three total).

Coach Bates and the men from Holly Springs will look to enact revenge on Edward Waters University on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in a win-or-go-home matchup.
