Baseball Sweeps GCAC Opening Doubleheader, Walks It Off In Game Two

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – The Rust College baseball program swept its historic first-ever GCAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday, besting the Tougaloo Bulldogs 9-7 in game one before a walk-off error in game two gave the good guys a 7-6 victory and a 2-0 conference mark.

Xavier Campbell picked up the save in game one and the win during game two, providing the same stat line in each contest of one inning, two hits allowed, and two strikeouts.

Jalin Thomas had a fantastic opener, going 3-for-3 with an equal amount of RBIs plus two doubles, a walk and scoring.

Stone Teague also put together a trio of singles to go along with a pair of ribbies and stolen bases while Ja'Shaun Franks and Jesse Burton III each went 2-of-3 with a run scored while the latter drove home a baserunner and stole second too.

Game one was a hitting display with 15 base knocks but game two was more about patience and timely at-bats, as they only logged a trio of hits plus five walks.

Malik Berrien reached base safely thrice courtesy of a single and two free passes, Craig Randolph had the other single to go along with Olin Evans smoking an RBI-triple.

Rashad Rogers was a stellar stopgap, hurling five frames of two-run baseball and whiffing a pair of Bulldogs.

The Baseball Bearcats will go for the three-game sweep on Sunday at noon in Bearcat Field.
