Rust College Sweeps GCAC Basketball Players Of The Week Again

NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the second consecutive week, Rust College basketball has taken both of the conference's weekly awards as Shay Johnson wins her second accolade of the season while Ronald Strothers picks up his first of 2021.

Johnson, a senior guard from Byhalia, Mississippi, has steered the ship for the undefeated Lady Bearcats, helping them to routs of both Arkansas Baptist and Stillman to extend its winning streak to nine-in-a-row. The Byhalia High School product averaged 14 points, five assists and three rebounds while shooting 64.3% from the floor and 81.8% from the charity stripe for the week. She posted a game-high 19 points versus the Tigers and a contest-best seven assists against the Buffaloes, fifth separate game with double-figure scoring or seven-plus assists this season.

Strothers, a native of Birmingham, Alabama out of Hueytown High School, put up 16 points, 4.5 three-pointers, two rebounds and a block per matchup as the Bearcats defeated East-West before dropping a nail biter to 17th-ranked Stillman. The senior forward was shooting the lights out of the McMillan Center, connecting on 10-of-25 (40%) shots, and going 9-for-20 (45%) from beyond the arc.

Following the conclusion of the doubleheader at Crowley's Ridge Tuesday night, the men will travel to Panama City Beach, Florida to battle LSU-Alexandria (November 22, 12:30 p.m. CT) and LSU-Shreveport (November 23, 7 p.m. CT) while the women return to The Natural State for a tournament at Lyon College to battle Central Methodist (November 19, 4 p.m.) before a rematch with the 15th-ranked Scots (November 20, 3 p.m.).
