Lady Bearcats Survive In Overtime Versus Cumberland, Rout TWU In Fisk Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Rust College women's basketball program received a scare from the Cumberland Phoenix (70-59, OT) and steamrolled Tennessee Wesleyan (73-54) but prevailed in both contests to remain undefeated.

 

The Lady Bearcats got a career night out of Shay Johnson versus CU as she nearly scored more points by herself (32) than Cumberland's top three scorers combined (31). She established herself as the frontrunner for GCAC Player of the Week as she shot 43.3% from the field while averaging 22 points, seven assists and 5.5 rebounds in the two games while nearly posting a triple-double against the Phoenix (32 points, nine boards, seven assists).

 

Niya McGuire made half of her shots while producing 11 points and six boards off the bench against Cumberland while the duo of India Green and Katie Blackmon co-led the Blue and White with 13 points each opposite TWU.

 

Katie Blackmon was the star of Sunday's tilt with Tennessee Wesleyan, posting a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds on top of three assists, a steal and a block on 6-of-8 shooting.

 

Zoe Alexander was consistent, tallying an average of 11 points a day while swiping four steals in each matchup and grabbing eight boards (11 total) in the win over CU.

 

The ladies from Holly Springs will make the short journey to Itta Bena, Mississippi for an exhibition against NCAA Division I foe Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday evening before returning to the W.A. McMillan Center to take on LeMoyne-Owen on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
