
Coleman & Watkins Both Grab First Weekly Conference Awards Of Season
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Both the men's and women's basketball programs have been dominating the GCAC Weekly Awards section this season as Jasmine Coleman and Jordan Watkins became the third Lady Bearcat and Bearcat, respectively, to be named Player of the Week.
Coleman, a senior guard from Ganado, Arizona, shot 52.6% from the floor (10-of-19) and 54.5% on three-pointers (6-for-11) while averaging 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 1.5 assists per game while leading the Lady Bearcats to victories over Crowley's Ridge (79-53) and LeMoyne-Owen (37-36).
Watkins, a junior forward from Pensacola, Florida, recording a double-double of 29 points and 13 boards as Coach Newton's men reached the century mark in a 100-80 romp over Crowley's Ridge. He was blazing hot in the shooting department last week as he went 20-of-33 (60.6%) overall and 9-for-16 (56.3%) from long range while dropping 23.5 points plus ten rebounds a night on top of five assists, three steals and a pair of blocks.
The men concluded its 2021 portion of the schedule as its next game will not take place until a home date with the Mississippi University for Women on January 5 at 7 p.m. while the women have an exhibition matchup at NCAA Division II's Union University in Tennessee at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening before going into hibernation.
