CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Rust College women's basketball program was one missed shot away from pulling off an upset over the 18th-ranked Montana Western Bulldogs but a Hail Mary from distance was answered to stun the Lady Bearcats in a 56-54 drama.
In a seesaw battle that saw 11 lead changes, the ladies from Holly Springs were able to earn a plus-five turnover margin despite leading by no more than two points at any given time.
Niya McGuire stole the spotlight for Coach Jackson's bunch, cobbling together a double-double of a team-high 13 points plus a game-best 11 rebounds while connecting on half of her 12 field goal attempts.
Shuntorri Rodgers was a thief on the afternoon with a contest-most four steals, falling just shy of the double-figure plateau in scoring at nine.
Amelya Hatch was the only student-athlete in Blue and White to nab a pair of assists, producing seven points, three boards, and two steals for her overall line as well.
Rust women's basketball has one more non-conference showdown on the ledger before ringing in the new year, tangling with fellow receiving vote-getter Rocky Mountain at 2 p.m. Mississippi time to conclude the 2022 slate in the Desert.
