HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. - The Rust College women's basketball program nearly put up a 50-spot (49) in the second half on Saturday night, hammering the Lady Ambassadors, 88-49.
The visitors from Huntsville, Alabama caught their hosts off-guard in the opening frame by taking a 20-17 lead, but a ludicrous 35 to 8 advantage in the third quarter put the game on ice for the Lady Cats.
Two different nights, two similar results as Katie Blackmon had an almost identical double-double line with 16 points and 11 rebounds on 6-for-8 (75%) shooting while Amelya Hatch logged a contest-high six assists once again.
Saturday's leading scorer was a unsung hero off the bench by the name of Ahmari Young who dropped 17 points in just 14 minutes as she shot 60% (6-of-10) from the field and 50% (3-of-6) when calling long distance.
Lyric Turner put together 13 points plus a quartet of steals in her stat line while Niya McGuire collected 14 points on a 7-for-13 (53.8%) shooting night.
A pivotal heavyweight battle between the GCAC's top two squads will commence Sunday evening at 5 p.m. with a Rust victory almost certainly wrapping up its third consecutive Regular Season Championship.
