Volleyball Starts Hot, Takes First Set In Home Opener

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – The Rust College volleyball program came out of the gates on fire, smoking the Golden Bears by a 13-point margin (25-12) in the opening game but could not carry its momentum any further, falling in four sets.

The first set was about as well-played as it could get for Coach Armstrong's ladies, hitting a scintillating .478 with 12 kills and only one error over 23 attacks while limiting Miles to just a .065 hitting percentage.

Both clubs held a clinic for how to properly serve as each squad notched a ridiculous 13 aces with Jelisa Alexander leading the Lady Bearcats with five, followed by Zanayah Myers with three and the duo of Alandria Calhoun plus Jasmine Coleman adding two apiece to the gaudy total.

Jasmine Coleman did a little bit of everything for the Blue and White, notching a double-double of a game-best 12 kills on top of 11 digs, two blocks, an assist, and a .281 hitting percentage.

Alexander came up just shy of her own double-double outing, putting together 15 assists and eight digs.

Calhoun joined Jasmine Coleman in breaking through the double-digit mark in kills, collecting ten over 20 attacks (.300), Zanayah Myers lived up to her libero status with a team-high 12 digs, and Michelene Coleman rejected a game-topping three swings.

RC will head to Jacksonville for the EWU / HBCU Invitational on September 3 and 4 before taking on a NCAA Division I foe in the Grambling State Lady Tigers in Louisiana.
