Lady Bulldogs Scores Impressive Victory Over Rust
Keeli Burton-Oliver and Courtney Lumpkins combined for 40 points in the road win.
HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. (February 8, 2025) - After a slow start in the first quarter, the Fisk University Lady Bulldogs found their rhythm and executed a remarkable 20-2 run. This surge of energy and focus allowed them to maintain the pressure and ultimately secure a 62-44 victory over Rust College in HBCUAC Eastern Division play from Holly Springs, Mississippi.
After going 7-of-9 from the free throw to start the game, Rust went 2-for-7 in the final three quarters from the line.
Keeli Burton-Oliver's Stellar Performance
Keeli Burton-Oliver was undoubtedly the star of the game, showcasing her exceptional skills and determination. She scored an impressive 16 of her 25 points in the first half, setting the tone for the Lady Bulldogs' offensive dominance. In addition to her scoring prowess, Burton-Oliver also demonstrated her strength on the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds.
Mired in a slump lately, Courtney Lumpkins played her best game since her 23-point performance on January 3 against the Virgin Islands. Her eight second-quarter points were a key to the Lady Bulldogs' turnaround. Her play sparked from an aggressive approach on the defensive end. She went 3-of-3 in the quarter. When Lumpkins plays well, Fisk usually wins.
"The second quarter we locked in on defense," said Lumpkins. "We know our defense is the key to us winning games. We were able to get easy shots in transition and frustrate them some. Playing here is not easy. They play to their crowd and go on runs. We needed to win this one bad. I'm glad we could come out of here with the win."
Redemption and Aggression
Burton-Oliver's performance was even more noteworthy considering her previous outing, where she scored only five points against Wilberforce. Determined to make a significant impact, she approached the game against Rust College with a renewed sense of aggression and confidence, which paid off remarkably.
"I think a big part of it was I didn't play that good last game and I wanted to come back and prove myself," said Burton-Oliver. "It's always a team thing and we prepared so well. We went out and executed what our game plan was."
Team Dynamics and Strategy
The Lady Bulldogs' ability to turn the game around after a challenging start is a testament to their teamwork and strategic adjustments. The 20-2 run, fueled by both offensive and defensive plays, highlighted their resilience and adaptability. This victory serves as a source of inspiration and a reminder of their potential in the HBCUAC Eastern Division. They now sit in second place with two home games to finish out the regular season.
