Shay Johnson’s Layup With Six Seconds Left Propels #9 Rust Past #8 Cumberlands
LAKELAND, Fla. – The Rust College women's basketball program has survived and advanced to the Regional Finals on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT as a last second layup by Shay Johnson setup a date with the top-seeded Southeastern Fire for a spot in Sioux City, Iowa, and the Round of 16.
The heart and soul of the Lady Bearcats, Johnson shot 38.9% (7-of-18) for a team leading 18 points plus a tied for team-best four assists plus four boards.
Katie Blackmon came up just short of a double-double in the program's NAIA Tournament debut, posting 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds to go along with a game-best three blocks as she shot a blistering 75% from the floor (6-for-8).
India Green was the third and final player donning Blue and White to crack double-figures, collecting ten points, three boards and a block while shooting 4-for-7 (57.1%).
Other notable performers for Coach Jackson were veteran Jasmine Coleman (nine points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal) and Niya McGuire (eight points, four assists, four boards and a pair of blocks).
